Welcome to my massive list of the best marketing books of all time

I’m somewhat of a book junkie. I believe that the more you learn the more you earn, and since I’ll be marketing for the rest of my life I figured I should try to learn all I can about it and that means reading marketing books. I have heard people argue that books can’t replace real life experience and I agree with them, kind of.

Experience is the best teacher and certainly marketing over the last 5 years has been my biggest teacher but books give me new thoughts, insight and new things to try and test for myself.

Here is my list of good marketing books that I have personally read the entire way through, read the notes version or listened to as an audio book. I consider all of these a useful read, some more than others. Any books I didn’t enjoy I left off the list rather than publicly slag them off, it’s not my style.

This is an ongoing post that will be updated when I read a new marketing book that I enjoy, so bookmark this page so you can find it again later!

If you think there is a marketing book I should read, tell me in the comments below

.

Old Classics

Scientific Advertising – Claude C. Hopkins

Published in 1923. David Ogilvy once said “Nobody should be allowed to have anything to do with advertising until he has read this book seven times”. Enough said

Kennedy

Over 100 years old! Published in 1905. The author introduced the world to the idea of advertising as “salesmanship in print.” Seems obvious now but not back then, just goes to show this really was one of the very first books to tackle the subject of good advertising

.

.

.

.

Joseph Cossman

Yes it is a little outdated as it was first published in 1964 and the mail order industry has changed a great deal since then but it still had some good pieces of info relating to mail order as well as marketing in general

.

It’s slightly controversial for me to put this in a marketing book list but I think it’s appropriate. It shows how to use the techniques but also how know when they are being used on you so that you can combat them. Although not all of them apply to marketing, I would say perhaps two thirds of the laws have some use in marketing

“The groundswell” is the term which the authors coined to describe the online dialogue that is empowering the customer and often leaving businesses with less control over the conversations which are taking place about them online. This can be a good or bad thing depending on what is being said. This book shows how businesses can embrace the groundswell and use it to their advantage rather than fearing it

This book is an A-Z of Social media, it’s over 700 pages and is a perfect reference book. It changed my own personal view/definition of social media.
Trust Agents: Using the Web to Build Influence, Improve Reputation, and Earn Trust – Chris Brogan and Julien Smith

This book has a reputation that precedes itself and for good reason in my opinion too. As a social media book it is not focused on technology but about building a good reputation and trust within your market. Trust is currency on the web and with out it the technologies will be ineffective marketing tools

Perhaps one of my favorite books on overall social media marketing strategy. It covers understanding the digital consumer, the tools and how to measure the success. Quite simply, buy this book if you want to learn how to engage better with your market

An inspiring book telling how Gary V was able to have huge success with his wine business thanks to new media. Most importantly he was making money doing something he loves. I agree with his sub headline, now really is the time to cash in on your passion and I don’t know how long that window will last. I’ve heard people slag this book off because it encourages a bit of risk taking and tells people to quit their day job if they don’t like it. Whilst I don’t encourage people to put themselves in a financially risky situation, I most certainly am not a proponent of living your whole life working in a job that makes you miserable just so you can survive and perpetuate your unhappy existence. Fortune favors the brave. If you want to have the business of your dreams I believe you can do it, just be smart about it about it not reckless. And Gary is right, with the amazing new technologies we have access to, there has never been a better time than right now

I really liked this book. It covers how the marketing game has changed and then goes on to give a practical guide to using social media for business. It also shows how social media relates to search as well which is one of the keys to social media success in my opinion

I’m putting this book in the social media section even though it’s information is just as relevant in the real world as it is in the electronic one.
A nice introduction for a social media marketing newbie. I enjoyed it but having read a lot about social media, I didn’t have too many light bulb moments of my own. However if you are new to the whole “social media” thing, then this is a good place to start

Perhaps more geared towards the larger organization but still largely applicable for smaller ones. If you have struggled to understand what benefits social media marketing can provide for a business then this book explores those different ways

I was pleasantly surprised by this one. Particularly relevant for the small biz owner, it explores that famous social media buzz word “engagement”. But it really does give reasons why it’s so important and usable tips on how to actually do it

If you use Facebook for marketing then you should read this because it goes deep into all the nitty gritty details. It’s pretty up to date too, last publication being Aug 2011 with another one to be released in 2013

With the internet being uncensored and unregulated people can say what they want, sometimes what they say can be unfair or even an outright lie. The book is a decent guide to reputation management, keeping the online conversation under control and even tackling those pesky trolls

I liked this because it came at social media from a different angle. Key takeaway would be that mattering a lot to a small, loyal group of people is better than mattering very little to lot’s of people

Relevant at the time I read it but not so much now because the information is very specific regarding certain social networks (which is a good thing) however it was published in 2009 so much of the information is outdated now.
One of the most exceptional business books I’ve ever read and it only takes a few hours to read. Not a marketing book, it outlines the 5 laws of success. Keeping these principles in mind (especially the first 4) whilst marketing certainly will help you

The follow up book to the Go-Giver. It’s not a story like the first one, this time round it give specific examples of the 5 laws being put into action

Getting back to basics. Marketers and advertisers often make their own lives more difficult by making simple concepts, complicated. It doesn’t need to be and shouldn’t be, this book shows how to recapture the obvious

Another book on my marketing book list that isn’t a marketing book (sorry about that). It’s an amazing business book which teaches you how to think very differently from everyone else, to be unreasonable to get far superior results. I think that my marketing should be unreasonable. This blog post is an example of unreasonable content marketing, it’s far too long but it might just work because it’s totally unreasonable

In today’s world with technology and information, the buyer/seller relationship has changed. Today the buyers are in control. This book shows you how to deal with people at their 4 decisive moments so you can make the sale in today’s information environment

Ever heard the phrase “under promise, over deliver”? Well forget you ever heard this flawed logic. In today’s super competitive environment you can’t afford to sell yourself short and then hope to please people afterwards. It’s folly because you won’t have any customers to please in the first place. You need to over promise and then back it up with an outstanding customer experience, fulfilling your promise

I know that sometimes it does not feel like it, but marketing online is a lot like marketing in the real world. You are marketing to the same people, after all. All you need to do is adapt some concepts from the real world to fit the world of online marketing. One concept that has been around a long time is the marketing mix. (AKA the Four Ps)

The term marketing mix was first introduced in an article written by Neil Borden called “The Concept of the Marketing Mix.” He started using the term after he heard James Culliton say, in 1948, that the role of the marketing manager was a mixer of ingredients. Having a marketing mix is often the first step when creating a marketing strategy based around a product or brand’s unique selling point; what makes it different from its competitors and attractive to consumers.

There are four parts that make up the marketing mix. These are known as the four Ps. Today, there are many variations on the four Ps, but the original four stand the test of time and work for online as well as brick and mortar marketers. The four Ps that make up the marketing mix are: Price, place, product and promotion.

1. Price – Is the first of the four Ps and it’s a simple idea. You have to make sure that the price that is set for the product is viable. No one will pay too much for a product without good reason and too cheap of a product makes it look… well, cheap. In addition to this you have to remember supply and demand and its effects on profit. Your goal as a marketer is to balance all these conflicting needs and produce a price that is profitable for your company and palatable for the consumer.

2. Place – The idea of place is all about where you are. In an online marketplace, it is important that your ‘place’ be as high up on search engine search rankings as possible for your product. This is the online equivalent to a corner lot on a busy street. You need to be placed where you are visible. In addition to this, place also has to do with your product. You need to get your product to your customer as efficiently as possible.

3. Product – Then you come to the product itself. What makes your product – be it an actual object, an idea, or a service, different and better than all the rest? What makes it stand out? You need to know what makes your product viable before you can effectively market it.

4. Promotion – Now we come to the meat of the matter. This is what people typically think about when they say marketing. Promotion is all about getting the word out. Getting your name out there is one step, place, but getting the information about your product out in the world is a huge step in getting it sold effectively. There are many ways to get the word out. Online you have viral marketing, social media, paid advertisements, and even simple word of mouth.

Marketing online is a little different then marketing in the real world, but many of the concepts still apply. If you use the four Ps, you can have a more successful marketing campaign and more sales of your product. It does not have to be complex, the four Ps are a simple idea but they work.

Maksud Rahman is a young Internet Marketer from London, England. He is 15 years old & he has learned how to make money online, something most adults I know in this industry have never worked out how to do. I first heard of Maksud when he famously won a £10,000 prize for winning a traffic competition. I then had the pleasure speaking along side him at Phil Turners Ministry of Traffic event. After seeing his presentation, I knew we had to do a webinar so he could share with you his little known tricks for making money online.
So here it is… Forgive me, we did have some techie issues with the webinar provider on the night so I pretty much disappear towards the end of the show but Maksud handles it well & carries on regardless. Because of this I have edited this quite heavily but the bulk of the info he shared is still in there. Enjoy!

Online marketing is war. This war is fueled by the fleetingness of the Internet, the large choice consumers have and the ease of comparison. Search engine marketing is the biggest battlefield within online marketing because an investment requires a lot of knowledge and can yield a high return. Therefore, there is a lot at stake and competition is huge: after all, 90% of search engine users only look at the first search results page. In this article, I want to analyze the battlefield by mapping the problem areas, and offering solutions as well. For my analysis, the two warring parties are two types of websites: the providers and the affiliates.

Providers are the original providers of services and products. They are the ones that deliver to the customer, the user. Providers have existed since time immemorial.
Affiliates are a more recent phenomenon. They assemble the providers and offer that comparison to the user.

Affiliates’ strategic advantages

Affiliates are parties whose main activity is marketing. Search engine marketing receives a lot of attention, the reasons for which will be dealt with later on in the article. If a website’s only goal is (search engine) marketing, it is easy to become an expert in this. Because of this, affiliates outshine the providers and take a greater slice of the profit. Providers in the hotel business, for instance, complain about affiliates taking the entire margin. Another complaint is that affiliates take away the consumers’ direct view on the providers, while often buying products and services via the affiliates.

Is this really a problem? How do you deal with this if you’re a marketer at a provider? How do you divide your marketing budget between advertising and making sure you’re found on affiliates’ websites? Is search engine marketing still feasible for the providers if the affiliates are always two steps ahead?

In this war, there are quite a few aspects to take into consideration. It turns out that, in the battle for the search engines, the providers have lost in most branches and comparison websites are getting one step ahead. Can they still win the war? Is there even a war? We will take a closer look at the soldiers and battlefield, and offer strategies to either profit from this battle, or save your own skin. The travel and financial sectors will serve as examples, as they have been in battle for quite some time and therefore provide enough evidence.

Explanations for the balance of power
Reasons why affiliates are always first when it comes to online (and search engine) marketing:

People like to compare and having an overview

If you’re buying a hotel room, mortgage, airline ticket or loan online, you don’t want to spend valuable time comparing 10 different providers. Some people especially are known for seeking out the lowest price, giving the affiliates already an advantage in the first stage of buying. You therefore get a higher CTR if your advertisement mentions a complete offer and “more than 100 special offers”, etc.

Search engines love people

Moreover, as long as affiliates get enough clicks in the search results, Google will have no reason to give them a lower ranking. Providers have always had high quality information, but quantity is very important.

As long as affiliates give the impression of being complete and offering reasonable quality, they will stay at the top.

People have different stages in search behavior

Doubleclick’s research Search Before the Purchase shows that people, prior to buying a product, go through different stages when gathering information. First, they conduct generic searches, forming an image of the product they want to purchase. As the purchase draws nearer, the search becomes branded and product specific. This means there are several moments in which the user encounters the affiliate, before visiting the provider’s website.

The solutions and opportunities

As we saw earlier, there is a great opportunity for new parties to seize power as affiliates. Especially in sectors with increasing commoditisation: that is where the providers are still in power. Fortunately, it also presents opportunities to the providers:

Combine affiliate and provider

More and more providers make comparisons themselves. Sometimes as providers, sometimes in a concealed manner, by placing their own products higher in the comparison. We know users greatly value independence, so the provider will have to use the affiliate’s disguise.

Personal ties with the user means repeat sales

The provider has a mighty weapon: the best and most personal contact with the user. After all, the product needs to be conveyed to the user.

However, affiliates have already entered this selling stage. Hotel affiliates offer printable maps and tourist guides of the city where the hotel is located. The user is also requested by e-mail to give his or her opinion of the hotel after the stay there. Therefore, the provider has to be careful about not just becoming the affiliates’ supplier.

From first contact on, the provider has to keep the user away from the affiliate. The only way to achieve this is through a good marketing process, in which the user, after first contact with the provider, is looked after and fed. So make sure there is direct contact with the user after the sale, instead of waiting until the user has come to get his product. Furthermore, think of evaluation (are you satisfied with our service?), a new and relevant, tailor-made special offer (we know you bought X, return/quantum discount) and simply providing a brilliant experience, of course.

People have different stages in their search behavior

This threat is an opportunity at the same time. Users, when comparing, will want to know more about some providers. The provider can grab the chance and close the deal, sooner than the user might have had in mind.

For this, the provider has to take into account the fact that the user has already gathered information, but will probably want more. If the provider can offer this information, and can link it to an extremely easy (usable) buying process, the user can be brought in.

This is a great opportunity, because often at this stage the provider has not yet paid for the lead. Of course, this differs greatly per sector, but in every sector, there is a moment in which the user is not yet ready for the purchase, but can actually be seduced into purchasing. Perhaps this hypothesis is reason for new research…

Conclusion The affiliates are a relatively new layer between the providers and the users. This layer is needed because what is on offer is too much for users to sift through, and because users want the best deal. This especially goes for products and services that have become a commodity. Because users go through different stages in the buying process, you need to make use of the affiliates, as well as promote your own brand. If you’re a marketer with a provider, you should look upon the affiliates simply as a new channel!
